Smoother, but not brighter: Dermalogica Daily Micro Exfoliant

I have quite a few exfoliators in my regime but by the end of 2012 I had accumulated two thirteen gram samples of Dermalogica’s Daily Micro Exfoliant.  The first from  Liberty’s Ultimate Beauty Gift,  and the second from Selfridge’s Lucky Bag.  Having given one to a friend  I am left with one which I am reviewing here.

On removing the grey lid the ‘ shaker’ opening is exposed.  Similar to a herb shaker the product is dispensed through six large holes… which means that if they product has been rolling around in the bottom of a bag for a few weeks,  as mine had… when you open it, the very fine powder will go everywhere.

The Daily Micro Exfoliant is not as fine as talc if you rub it on the back of a dry hand it is very very slightly abrasive.  The instructions state that the face should be cleansed prior to use.  The exfoliant is then put it into damp hands and massaged into the face.   Once the powder is mixed with water, it forms a thin paste (think flour and water but without the lumps). The slight abrasiveness of the dry powder is lost so there is no exfoliating sensantion as you massage.

After one minute of massage I used a warm damp cloth, to remove the exfoliant, toned and then used a facial oil and my skin was definitely smoother and was not irritated or sore as if it had been exfoliated to within an inch of it’s life but my skin did not look brighter or clearer.  I can see how it would be appropraite to use on a daily basis.  However, after the fourth day of use, I stopped feeling that my skin was smoother then it had been the previous days and after the first week I stopped using it daily.

For me, this kind of light exfoliation is less then what is achieved by adding a small amount of a traditional mechanical exfoliator to a face wash.   The slight improvement in texture was not supported by an improvement to the appearance of the skin.   It will not impact on my weekly use of an exfoliating mask and I did not find the experience is not as enjoyable as using the Champneys cleansing balm.

Have you used this product?  What did you think of it??
