Tools of the Trade: Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curler BoxShu Uemura eyelash curlers have to be one of the most beauty iconic tools in the beauty world. Ever. In my decades of make up obsessiveness, these eyelash curlers have consistently been top rated by both beauty insiders and outsiders.  So I decided to see  invest in a pair to see if they were really worth all the hype.

Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers

Like all eyelash curlers of this design, they look like instruments of torture. The Laura Mercier curlers have a sleeker, and arguably more contemporary design.  They possibly look like they will do you less damage, as they are moved towards the very delicate eye area…  but I have not used them so I cannot comment on their efficacy.

Back to the Shu Uemura’s, so, using your thumb and middle finger  (using the index finger feels uncomfortable, and you have less control) the curlers are opened, placed over the lashes and then closed. Holding the curler closed on the lashes closed for five to ten seconds you then open the jaws of the curler, and then close them again slighty further up the lashes.

Spare Silicone Strip for Shu Uemura Eyelash Curlers

The bottom jaw has a rounded silicone strip that the lashes rest on. The upper jaw which does not have a silicone strip on it pushes down on the lashes and the strip, which is what shapes (curls) the lashes and you get a spare silicone strip in the box!  The eyelash curlers of my past would leave lashes with a line across the lashes like they had been folded in half, but the molded silicone prevents that.

Maintenance is straightforward. Use the curlers on clean lashes, before eyeshadow.  If I do forget and use them after eyeshadow, I use some Bioderma on a cotton bud to wipe off any shadow.  Some people use the curlers after mascara, and I have tried this, but I get a better effect when they are used before.

Thanks to Revitalash, I have eyelash length, but my eyelashes are quite straight.  Using eyelash curlers does open up the eyes with the folded line effect.  If like me you are not blessed with naturally curly lashes this is a great tool to have.  Dont expect a false lash look but if you don’t wear lashes seven days a week, you will find that these curlers in conjunction with a good mascara will have a big impact.
