For over two hundred and fifty years, Floris have been making fragrance in London.  At 89 Jerym Street (behind Fortnum and Mason) you will find an unassuming shop front which houses some of the living history of fragrance in the UK.  To this day they can and do make  fragrance in store – at the back of the shop there is a small museum where you can see Floris of centuries past as well as ledgers which show the accounts and purchases of previous customers including stars of screen and stage and royalty.

The ‘By Request’ service is where customers have an opportunity to share a fragrance idea which the Floris team and if an idea sparks their creative juices, they will create a fragrance.  This is how 89 Jerym Street first came to be.  An idea for a fragrance that represents the site where the Floris legacy began. Referencing the 89 Jerym Street of 1703, the fragrance is influenced by the shirt makers, gin distilleries and plane trees that would have been prevalent at the time.

At first spray the scent is very cologne / citrus which is great for me.  The green vetiver, mandarin and bergamot and softened with a touch of violet. On my skin I don’t get any of the violet, I get thirty minutes of green citrus freshness.  Beautiful!  As the top notes dissipate, you get into the coriander, more vetiver, juniper berry and armoise (artemisia).  At this stage something strange happens to me.  I get a real metallic and to be honest slightly unpleasant note on my skin.  It lasts for approximately one hour.  Neither the Mr nor my sister had this issue but on me there it is definitely there.  After an hour, that goes and it is back to the greenness with more vetiver and  musk amber and sandalwood.

Outside of the metallic hour on my skin, I really like this fragrance.  It is not overwhelmingly citrussy, it sounds strange but it smells quite British.  There isn’t an overkill of lemon or bergamot that some Italian colognes have.  I am a fan of colognes so I really feel that it is unisex but if you prefer a sweet or gourmand fragrance this wont be for you.  89 Jerym Street has great longevity – between seven and nine hours.  Whilst the citurus top makes it an obvious choice for summer, I would wear this all year round.
