Yes Really. Seem strange? Well – not really, we go to Boots for glasses – why not Superdrug? I generally like to visit an optician for my eye test as I am a heavy screen user as well as a driver. There is a family history of glaucama and cataracts in my family so my eyesight is something that I take very seriously. In addition, I have a plus three perscription in my left eye. This means that without lens technology I would have a thin lens for my right eye and a Mr Magoo thick lens in my left eye and of course with this higher prescription comes greater cost.
In an ideal world, I would have different coloured frames to coordinate with different outfits. In the real world I should have a spare pair of glasses in the car and a pair at home. So an online service where I can pick up glasses for a little as nine pounds sounds good to me. In addition, lens coatings and delivery is free on all prescription glasses over twenty five pounds. On top of that, you can choose to collect your glasses from your local store if having them delivered is not an option for you.

I am currently going through a cat eye frame phase so I was keen to see what Superdrug had to offer in this style. Have to say it was disappointing that there was only one style … although it is available in four colourways. Immense is forty five pounds – so a mid range price for the site. I chose the Demi Red which has a tortoise shell type effect. I have been wearing glasses for about thirty years and this is my first non black frame. My glasses arrived about seven days after my order was made and interestingly the hard case arrived a few days before the glasses did.
The Immense frames are narrower than my current frames and have a vintage look. When the glasses arrived I put them on straight away and they stayed on my face for a full week. The prescription was spot on so there was no ‘getting used to them’ period. I just put them on and carried on. they arrived in approximately seven days of my order and fit me perfectly. The lens on my left eye is not discernibly thicker than that of my right and the frames are light but well constructed. They don’t slide down my face when I am reading and they are perfect for driving.
Overall I am really impressed. Will this replace my annual trip to the optician? No. Will I stop picking up a new pair of specs when I am at the optician? No, but it will allow me to keep a pair in the car and coordinate my outfits and give me a cheaper option to wear when I am doing DIY.
