First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream – An Alternative to E45?

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream

First Aid Beauty Ultra Repair Cream on first appearance looks like the skin cream of my youth. I am always fascinated by white creams in a tub because of a sentimental association with Aqueous Cream. One of my earliest skincare memories is Aqeous Cream.  A water based white cream in a 500ml tub that I would get on prescription from my GP to deal with my ultra dry skin.  Fast forward a couple of decades and I find out that Aqueous Cream as 1% Sodium Lauryl Sulphate which can irritate the skin especially if are already suffering from a skin condition.  As I got older and got a bit of cash in my pocket I moved onto E45.  E45 however contains paraffin which is an ingredient I personally prefer not to use on my skin.  Added to that, my skin was dry within an hour using that product so I don’t use it anymore. .

Packaging

I’ve got the large size of the Ultra Repair Cream because there is alot of me and I figured that if it was good, I would slather it all over my body.  The tub is generic it is only the label that provides interest.

Ingredients

Ultra Repair Cream has been formulated without:-

  • Alcohol,
  • Artificial Colorants,
  • Artificial Fragrance,
  • Lanolin,
  • Mineral Oil,
  • Parabens,
  • Petrolatum,
  • Phthalates,
  • Propylene Glycol, and
  • Sulfates.

So far so good – but what is actually in it?  The active ingredients that the brand are shouting about are the colloidal oatmeal.  Colloidal oatmeal is finely ground oats which are boiled and the liquid has been clinically proven to be high in anti oxidants and skin soothing beta-glucans. There is also shea butter which is nourishing and moisturising and allantoin which is a by product of uric acid.  It is not clear from First Aid Beauty whether it is synthetic or natural form but if you are looking for a ‘free from’ alternative to Aqueous Cream and or E45 this may be a good place to start.

On the Skin

Whilst on paper this looks like a good option for my crocodile skin, in reality is isn’t.  It is light and water based so it is about two hours before my skin is screaming for moisture again.  At best I can use it as a hand-cream.  First aid beauty say that you can use this on the face too, but I would really rather not. I find it a bit heavy as opposed to nourishing and hydrating.  If you have dry skin on the face, it is a great base for makeup. If you have combo or oily skin I dont think this will be for you.
