The mister is a big fan of fragrance. He is a man who knows what is he likes and in terms of grooming, it is the area where I have least influence on what he uses. He wasn’t however familiar with John Varvatos so it was exciting for me to get him to try this scent. I wasn’t sure that he was going to like it but I knew that my dad would so I was all ready let him sniff it and pass it on to my dad. However, he has had a tight grip on it since the first spray.
John Varvatos is the man we have to thank for the boxer brief or as I know them ‘Calvins’. This garment of underwear history was most famously advertised by singer turned model turned actor Marky Mark (aka Mark Wahlberg). John Varvatos is also the man behind Polo Jeans – both are brands that the mister has worn. He is now that man behind his own fashion house, which has everything from accessories to clothes. It is definitely range for men not boys and it is popular with musicians.
This fragrance is right up my ally. Super citrussy with mandarins, clementines and tangelos (mandarin and grapefruit hybrid) with a little bit of thyme and marjoram herbiness. Ginger and orange in the middle and the base is very light and contains some new ingredients for me. Kephalis, georgywood and serenolide which give a cedar/resin/musk base.
It smells quite different on us, much spicier on the mister and more citrussy on me, sadly it is not that long lasting on either of us and for both of us, this is definitely a summer fragrance.
The packaging is fabulous. The one hundred twenty-five millilitre bottle is slightly wider then it is tall and it is wrapped in a twine that has been crocheted around the bottle. The lid is speckled with blue, as is often found on weather-beaten copper statues and the ‘jv’ branding on the token around the neck of the bottle is a nestled on top of the crochet like a pendant on top of a hair chest. I rather like it but the mister thinks it is superfluous! There are five mens fragrances from the house of John Varvatos so if the man in your life is not a fan of light colognes they will be able to find fragrances with more traditional notes (wood, leather and tobacco).
The John Varvatos range is available from Debenhams and other authorised stockists. 125ml of Artesan Acqua retails for £60.00
