Sol de Janeiro: Bum Bum Cream

Sol de Janiero Bum Bum Cream

Everyone and their brother’s dog sitter is going crazy for the Sol de Janiero Bum Bum cream.  I got a deluxe sample size in the Liberty Advent Calender and I have been using it for a little while and I have some thoughts.

The Brand Says

Sol de Janiero claim that the Bum Bum cream is inspired by ‘Brazillians’s favourite feature – the bum bum.’  Really?  In 2018 brands have to resort to perpetuating stereo types about  a whole nation for marketing purposes?  The product is ‘infused’ with guarana – a plant commonly found in Brazil.  Guarana would have been a better ‘marketing story’ than bottoms.  Especially as the brand also says that the Bum Bum cream is an all over body moisturiser not a cream specifically for your bottom.  Guarana contains high quantities of caffeine which apparently will smooth the skin on the body making it, to quote the brand again ‘sexy’ and ‘pinchable’.  Again – REALLY?  Pinchable?

The Smell

I love fragrance.  Much of the hype around this product relates to it’s smell.  I really don’t like how this product smells.  It is, to my nose the scent of overly sweet nutty ice cream.  After two deep sniffs  with my nose in the jar and I start to feel nauseous.  If it had the nuttiness without the creaminess or the creaminess without the nuttiness, I might have been able to deal with it. This particular blend gets a no from me.  This fragrance is available as a body mist.  I can’t imagine anything worse!

On The Skin

Bum Bum cream has a light body lotion texture.  I have very dry skin on my body.  The formula is just not emollient enough for me.  I have alot of texture on the back of my thighs.  The cream had absolutely no effect on it – and after 3 hours, my skin is in need of another blast of hydration.  The coconut oil, cupuaçu Butter and  açaí oil which the Bum Bum cream contains are not in  high enough quantities to hydrate my thirsty skin.  Hydrated skin looks and feels smooth and plumped up.  As the Bum Bum cream does not hydrate my skin, it is not surprise that it did nothing for the texture of my skin.

Final Thoughts

I really like the packaging.  The lip of the lid is quite wide making it easier ergonomically to open.  The yellow and white combination makes a colourfull change from the majority white packaging you seen in beauty departments.  That is all I like though. If you go to the Sol de Janiero website, the banner image is of women’s bottoms.  Two stone ago and 25 years ago my bottom did not look like that.  To be honest, I dont expect the Bum Bum cream to make me look like that. I just want a body moisturiser that maximises the health of the skin on my body.

Are you a fan of the Sol de Janiero Bum Bum cream?  Do you think that their marketing is over the top?
